THINGS YOU MUST DO/KNOW
THE FIRST TIME YOU USE ZSNES

.
TURNING ON THE SOUND

Go to the "Config" menu and then to "Sound". Click on the box next to "Enable Sound" to turn on the sound. You should see a check mark in the box.
.

SETTING THE BUTTONS
Go to the "Config" menu and then to "Input #1". In the screen that comes up click on "Keyboard" then click on "Set". Now to choose which button is which, click on the green font and then press the button you want it to be.

CHANGING THE VIDEO MODE (ZSNES FOR WINDOWS ONLY)
You must do this so transparency can be enabled. Go to the "Config" menu and then to "Video".  Click on "640X480 DR FULL" and then click on "Set".  And to add the cool display filter, put a check in the box next to 2XSAI ENGINE.  Feel free to experiment with Eagle Engine and Interpolation to see if you'll like those display filters better.  If you want ZSNES to be a window and/or with a smaller screen then choose a video mode under 640X480 DR FULL.

CHANGING THE VIDEO MODE (ZSNES FOR DOS ONLY)
You must do this so transparency can be enabled. Go to the "Config" menu and then to "Video".  Click on "640X480X16B" (the 4th one after MODEQ) and then click on "Set".  If that doesn't work then try the video mode that says Vesa 1.5.  If that doesn't work or runs too slow then just stick with the very first video mode (that's the default one).

LOADING A ROM
Go to the "Game" menu and then go to "Load". If you put the ROM in the same folder that the ZSNES is in then you should see the "smc" of the ROM. Double click on it and the game will begin to run. But if you put the ROM file in a different folder then you have to look for it in your computer's directory.

BRINGING BACK THE MENU WHILE PLAYING A ROM
Press escape (Esc).

- ZSNES FAQ -

Q: For the Windows version of ZSNES, when its a window--how the heck do I move it?
A: You see those red spots in that picture? That's what you need to grab to drag the window.

Q: What does the SAVE STATE feature do and how do I use it?
A: SAVE STATE saves the exact spot you are in a ROM. You can recall your saved state by going to LOAD STATE. Remember that you must have the ROM loaded in order to load its save state. ZSNES lets you have multiple save states for each ROM. Use PICK STATE to choose which save state you want to save or load.
.

Q: Do you know any places where I can download save states?
A: The
ZSNES Homepage has a save state archive. At the homepage, go to "WWW Board" and you should be able to find the archive from there. And this web site has a good collection too: The Saved Game Archive. But go to the ZSNES Homepage first cause their save state archive is huge.

Q: How do I use Game Genie codes?
A: Load the ROM you want to use Game Genie codes with. Go to the "Cheat" menu and then to "Add Code". In the black space next to "Enter Code" type the Game Genie code. Don't forget to add the "-" and don't put any spaces. Then in the black space next to "Description" type what the code does in as little words as possible. And then click on "Add". If ZSNES won't let you add the code then that means the code you put doesn't work. If ZSNES accepts the code then that means it works. When you finish entering the code(s), go to the "Game" menu and reset the ROM. Now you can play your ROM with the Game Genie codes you entered! Cheat! Cheat! Cheat!

Q: Do you know where I can find Game Genie codes?
A: GameFAQs and GameSages have plenty.

.

Q: Your ROM keeps on freezing in the same place! Is it defective?
A: None of my ROMs are defective. I have gotten all of them from the best emulation sites. Emulation isn't perfect so freezing can happen. Once it happens--you're screwed.  The only thing you can do is frequently save so when freezing occurs you won't lose that much of your progress in a game.

Q: I still can't see a thing! The screen is covered by a layer of something.
A: This is why its important to change your video mode but if you already tried and it didn't work then that means your computer doesn't have "Vesa".  There are still other ways for you to be able to see where you're going. ROMs have up to four background layers. Since your computer can't handle transparency, a whole background layer covers the screen. The 4 background layers can be turned on and off by pressing either 1, 2, 3, or 4.
